DIY Costumes For Your Preschool Halloween Party

With Halloween quickly approaching, it’s time to start thinking about our preschool’s annual Halloween Parade and Party! While it may be easy to grab the latest superhero or princess costume off of the rack, creating a DIY costume is a great, and easy, way to show off your creativity and get your child involved in the holiday fun! Here are a few budget-friendly ways to skip the Halloween aisle and earn major DIY points at any Halloween party.

DIY Halloween With What You Have

Often, we have plenty of craft supplies and old pieces of clothing lying around that can easily become great costumes for your preschooler’s party! This not only saves a trip to the craft store but also saves money!

Moose

Not only is this a quick and adorable costume, but it is also perfect for preschoolers of all ages!

What You Need:

  • A Brown hoodie
  • Gloves
  • Pillow or quilt stuffing
  • Safety pins or needle and thread
  • Black eyeliner

Steps:

  1. Fill gloves with stuffing.
  2. Attach to a hoodie with safety pins or needle and thread.
  3. Draw a triangle on the tip of the nose to complete the look!

Minion

Still one of the most popular and cutest costumes here’s an easy DIY version to join Gru’s Crew.

What You Need:

  • Blue Jean Overalls
  • Yellow hoodie
  • Goggles (swimmer or safety goggles work in a pinch)
  • Black pipe cleaners
  • Hot glue
  • Black shoes and gloves (optional).

Steps:

  1. Glue pipe cleaners to the hood of the hoodie.
  2. Put hoodie and overalls on your preschooler.
  3. Place goggles over the hood.
  4. Complete the outfit with black shoes and gloves!

Rosie The Riveter

Perfect for all those strong-willed children, this easy take on the cultural icon will have them standing proud!

What You Need:

  • Red bandana
  • Blue button-down shirt
  • Jeans
  • “We Can Do It” sticker or pin
  • Lipstick (optional)

Steps:

  1. Write or print a “We Can Do It” sticker or pin.
  2. Affix pin or sticker to a button-down.
  3. Dress your preschooler in button-down and jeans.
  4. Fold bandana in a triangle and tie around the head.
  5. Complete the look with bright lipstick.

Cheap & Easy DIY Costumes

While these costumes may require you to run out to a store, you can find many items at discount stores!

Donut

Everybody loves donuts and this simple costume is almost good enough to eat!

What You Need:

  • Round pool float
  • Spray paint
    • One color for the donut, one color for frosting, multiple colors for sprinkles.
  • Foam curlers
  • Box
  • Twine
  • Ribbon
  • Hot glue

Steps:

  1. Spray paint the pool float donut colored in a well-ventilated area.
  2. Place curlers in a box and spray paint desired colors.
  3. After pool float is dry, spray paint with desired frosting color and let dry.
  4. Hot glue curler sprinkles onto the float.
  5. Tie twine around the valve and attach ribbon.
  6. Place ribbon over one shoulder “messenger bag” style.

Lego

Preschoolers love creating with Legos and with this fast DIY Halloween costume, they can become the Lego! Plus, these Legos are big enough to avoid stepping on.

What You Need:

  • Cardboard box
  • Disposable plastic cups
  • Hot glue
  • Spray paint
  • Box cutter
  • Dinner plate
  • Soup bowl

Steps:

  1. Cut off bottom flaps of the box.
  2. Place a dinner plate at top of the box.
  3. Trace around the plate and cut out for the head.
  4. Place bowl on either side of the box.
  5. Trace around the bowl and cut out for arms.
  6. Glue four, six, or eight cups to front of the box in two even rows.
  7. Spray paint the entire box desired color in a well-ventilated area.
  8. Complete the costume with coordinating pants and a shirt.

Halloween is meant to be one of the most fun holidays for children and costumes are a huge part of that entertainment!
